According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2.3 million older adults sought medical treatment for nonfatal falls. For older adults, falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries including hip fracture and head injury. If you are at risk of fall or have a history of falls, WE CAN HELP!
The Biodex Balance System is an effective tool in both assessment of fall risk and balance impairment as well as a valuable training device. This system is useful for a wide variety of patients including those with orthopedic diagnoses, athletic injuries, patients with neurological diagnoses (such as stroke or traumatic brain injury), amputation and for those with vestibular disorders. Using a computerized platform, the device tests your ability to maintain upright posture in a variety of conditions and compares your results to those in your age group.
Testing modules of the Biodex Balance System SD include:
Limits of Stability: how much a person can lean in a given direction without loss of balance
Postural Stability: emphasizes a patient’s ability to maintain balance
Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction and Balance:
Test is comprised of 4 conditions:
(1) Eyes open on firm surface
(2) Eyes closed on firm surface
(3) Eyes open on foam surface
(4) Eyes closed on foam surface
Athlete Single Leg Stability Test: tests single leg balance. Compares data against norms collected using Biodex Balance System
Fall Risk Assessment: Allows identification of potential risk for fall in patients. Test results are compared to normative values based on age.
Concussion management: The Biodex Balance Assessment Program for Concussion Management allows therapists to assess the elements of balance before and after injury. The objective data can monitor recovery and assist the medical team in the decision to return to play.
Following testing, therapists are able to create an individualized program to address your specific needs. Six training modules on the device can assist in improving agility, neuromuscular control, sense of position and stabilization exercise, range of motion and weight shift exercises. The device allows therapists to securely store patient’s performance in objective format to monitor progress throughout course of therapy.
